Wainui Beach

Only 10 minutes from Gisborne, Wainui Beach is a local favourite and a true East Coast gem. It’s known for its golden sand, rolling surf, and relaxed coastal vibe that attracts surfers, swimmers, and families year-round.

The beach offers consistent waves, making it one of New Zealand’s best spots for surfing whether you’re experienced or just starting out. You can hire surfboards or book lessons from Blitz Surf Shop, which is conveniently located on the way from the Gisborne CBD to Wainui. The long stretch of beach is perfect for walking, jogging, or simply enjoying the fresh sea air.

While it’s beautiful, Wainui Beach can have strong rips and currents, so it’s not recommended for young children or weak swimmers. There is an estuary nearby, but it’s not suitable for swimming as it contains drain water. Always stay between the flags, as surf lifesavers patrol closely and remain on high alert for safety.

Wainui is an amazing surf beach but not the safest swimming spot for little ones. Pack sunscreen, bring plenty of water, and remember that dogs must be kept on a leash.
