Waikanae Beach

Located right in the heart of Gisborne, Waikanae Beach is one of the region’s most popular and family-friendly swimming beaches. With gentle waves, soft golden sand, and easy access from town, it’s a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike.

Waikanae is generally safer than many of the surrounding surf beaches, making it ideal for families with children, though care should still be taken, especially if there are logs or driftwood washed up on the shoreline. If you notice large logs in the water, it’s best to keep children away, as the current can shift them unpredictably.

The beach is patrolled by surf lifesavers during the summer months, and there are plenty of facilities nearby including toilets, changing areas, a children’s playground, and the popular Waikanae Beach Café, perfect for coffee, ice creams, and light meals with a sea view.

It’s also a great spot for walking, sunbathing, or watching the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean. Bring your beach gear, pack sunscreen, and enjoy a relaxing day by the water.
