Around 30 minutes inland from Gisborne, Rere Rockslide is one of Tairāwhiti’s most thrilling natural attractions. This long, smooth rock slope has been carved by the Wharekopae River into a natural waterslide surrounded by beautiful countryside.
The main tip: bring something to float down on. A bodyboard, inflatable tube, or old air mattress makes the ride smoother and a lot safer. The rocks are extremely slippery, so always watch the locals go first as they know the safest path. Usually, the furthest side where the water flows strongest is the smoothest line down.
Even walking across or climbing up from the bottom can be tricky, so take your time and watch your footing. Rock shoes or grippy water shoes can be really helpful for extra safety. It’s also important to remember that this is a natural attraction, not a supervised waterslide. You can get bumps and scrapes if you pick the wrong line or hit a dry patch, so if it feels a bit too adventurous, skip the slide and enjoy the nearby Rere Falls instead.
Just a few minutes away, the Rere Falls offer a wide, scenic waterfall that’s perfect for swimming, photos, or a relaxing picnic after your adventure.
Tip: Bring towels, wear shorts over your togs, and pack a picnic to share by the falls. This is Gisborne fun at its best.
